- History / Biographical
- In 1993 Suzan Horovitch (née Green) began the task of typing out her uncle Sidney Ofner’s letters, written home to Montreal during his station in Europe in World War II. Sidney Ofner was in Italy when he was killed supporting a trench on January 15, 1944. Suzan Horovitch and her husband Art spent several years compiling into a book the letters as well as official Canadian Forces correspondence regarding Sidney. The Horovitch’s also tracked down and contacted several veterans whom had served with Sidney in order to gather all information possible on his time in the army and his death. Sidney Ofner was the only son of Alexander and Tillie Ofner, both of Montreal. Mr. Ofner ran a women’s ready-to-wear garment store, in which Sidney also worked. He was a graduate of Strathcona Academy. Sidney enlisted in the Victoria Rifles of Canada in 1942, going overseas in 1943. He was later stationed to North Africa with a reinforcement regiment and then with the Royal Canadian Regiment in Italy in the fall of 1943. Sidney’s sister Marjorie, mother of Leona (mentioned in the letters) and Suzan) saved all of the letters from her brother.

- Heart-shaped autograph book made of folded paper, with purple fabric cover embroidered with the letter F in red thread. Pages are glued together with glue made from bread starch. The booklet contains 8 folded paper pages with messages written by prisoners. There are 21 different messages inside the booklet including 2 which are not signed. 19 different names appear. 4 messages are dated 1944-12-12 and one is dated 1945-01-26. Narrative: Booklet was given to Fania Landau on her 20th birthday by 19 co-workers in the Union ammunition factory in Auschwitz. Made in secret with materials stolen or found in the camp, the heart brings together messages of hope and birthday wishes. It represents the solidarity between these women, but also their courage and strength to withstand their horrific situation. Again, at great peril, they also presented a “cake” to Fania, made of hidden bread and decorated with margarine, on December 12, 1944.

- 8 candle holders mounted against an elaborately sculpted relief background. The background is in the shape of a crown with scalloped edges; in the centre are represented the Tablets of stone flanked by two lions rampant. The candle holders are shaped like small pots and balanced on a bar. There is a handle on each side and a hollowed-out space beneath them to catch wax drippings. The whole is balanced on four small, elaborately patterned pad feet. The back is undecorated, designed to be laid flat against a wall; there are two interlocking rings near the top from which the lamp can be hung.

The right panel has a b&w portrait at t.l. and fingerprints at t.r.. There are four circular Reichsadler ink stamps issued by the presidential police in Mainz, as well as a blue postage stamp from 1938 at the b.r. of the left panel. Birks, oldest son of Henry Birks used to buy jewelry and silver from the factory owned by Frank Cahn’s grandparents. The two families had known each other from before World War I. The original plan was to send only Frank to Canada but after Karl (Frank’s father) was sent to Buchenwald, they sent an urgent cable to Mr. Birks, asking for his help for the entire family. Eventually, visas were issued in Hamburg by the Canadian Consul on January 23, 1939 for Karl, his wife Marie, their 3 sons Frank, Robert and Paul and Marie’s mother, Elise Leitschen. The permission to go to Canada made it possible Karl’s immediate release. The whole family arrived in Halifax on March 5, 1939.
