Notes: OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, March 10, 1997 Koven, Joseph – Mr. Joseph Koven, son of Maurice and Rose (Golub) Koven, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 5th, 1997 while at the Maine Medical Centre in Portland, Maine. As a young man, Mr. Koven was involved in interscholastic hockey and community sports as a member, organizer of the Coldbrook Aces (senior) softball and hockey teams. He was an avid golfer and racquetball player and a member of the YMCA. His organizing of Coldbrook sports teams was a welcomed greeting for returning WWII veterans. He graduated from Saint John High School and from Vocational School with a diploma in Small Business Management. Early in his youth, he successfully operated and owned the Grand Department Store in the City's North End (Main Street). He owned and operated the very first coin operated Laundromat in Saint John. Later he worked as a sales representative and buyer for the Calp's Department Store. As a successful entrepreneur, he built the original Three Mile Pub. Eventually, he successfully operated and owned two local pubs, The Portland Pub and Steakhouse and JR's Pub. Joseph was a lifelong member and strong supporter of the Shaarei Zedek Synagogue and local Jewish community. He contributed to many charities in his faith, as well as supported local charities and sponsored local sports teams in hockey and baseball. He will be remembered for his immense love of his family, friends, business associates, acquaintances and people of the local community. His sense of good humour, love for music and his jovial manner lifted the spirits of all who knew and loved him. He leaves to mourn his wife, the former Ruth (Rilla) Smith, his daughters Rose Koven-McLaughlin and her husband Brian, Sharon Kincade and Michelle (Shelley) Tremblay; his twin sons, William (Billy) and Matthew Koven; his much-loved grandchildren, Stephanie and Jamie Kincade, Brian and Andrew Tremblay all of Saint John. Also left to mourn are his younger brother Samuel and wife Elizabeth Koven of Saint John; a half sister, Frances Kaplan of New York City, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. He is predeceased by his much loved sister Hannah (Honey) Smith. The funeral was held from the 'Hillsley' Funeral Home, 91 Leinster Street, Saint John (634-1700) on Sunday, March 9, 1997 with service at 2 p.m. Interment in the Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated. Gravestone reference code(s): JM 998.61.484. Memorial plaque in synagogue: Our Departed - D2.
