History / Biographical
The Torontow family owned/operated a hardware store in Downtown Ottawa from 1910 or 1922-1987 called Torontow Hardware. Joe Torontow the father of the family, was a very influential person who was one of founding members of the board of directors of congregation Beth Shalom, the treasurer of the Chevra Kadisha, a member of Rockliffe Lodge,B'nai B'rith, Ottawa and Montreal Sick Benefit Societies, the Board of Trade, Men's Canadian Club, Ottawa Hebrew Free Loan Society, among others. It was Abraham Torontow (b. 1866 - d. April 15, 1937) and Ethel Soloman Torontow (d. 1937) that established the family in Ottawa. The family name was changed from Torontoff (the "ff's where silent) when Abraham and Ethel arrived in Canada. Abraham made his living by operating a fruit stand in the By Ward Market. Abraham and Ethel had ten children - Joseph (b. 1889 - d. 1984), Louis (b. 1886 - d.1962), Moses (b.1894 - d.1960), Sarah (b.1894 - d. 1964), Michael (d.1945), Jack (b.1900 - d.1945), Anna (b.1900), Harry (b.1903), and Saul (b.1906 - d.1948) Joseph married Dora Laitman on October 14, 1906 and had four children: Sarah (Sally) (m. Joshua Rubin), Faye (b. 1909) (m. Nap Kapinsky), Saul (Red, b.1910-d.1975) (m.Eva Baylin, b. 1918), and Norman (b.1923) (m. Stella Gandall) Saul Torontow, the son of Joe Torontow was elected as a member of the Hadassah National Council in 1938. Norman and Stella were married on January 27, 1952 at Agudath Achim Congregation. He was later appointed president to the Jewish boys’ softball league in 1953. StelIa and Norman Torontow established the StelIa and Norman Torontow Fund to benefit CZF Teen Summer Program in Israel in 1988. Louis Torontow married Miriam Ferguson (b.1893-d.1956) and had four children: Sylvia (b.1916) (m. William Manson), Doris (b.1918) (m.Ned Adler), Cyril (b.1920) (m. Norma Hetherington), and Anne (b.1925) (m. Samuel Betcherman). Moses Torontow married Anne Wittan (b.1898-d.1952) and had five children: Henry (Hank) (b.1917-d.1976), Edward (b.1919) (m. Pearl Tanzear, 1943), Jean (b.1923) (m. Max Naemark), Leah (b.1924), and Ralph (b.1930) (m. Eleanor Webb).Henry (Hank) Torontow married Beatrice Yaraskavitch. He was actively involved in Scouts Canada and there is now a troop that bears his name. Sarah Torontow married Adolphe Saslove and had three children: Edward (b.1921-d.1945), Ralph (b.1927) (m.Sylvia Weiner), and Martin (b.1933) (m.Anna Hart, December 1956). Jack Torontow married Sheila Lee (b.1909-d.1986) and had two children: Ralph (b.1938) and Harry (b.1942-d.1965). Anna Torontow married David Dover (b.1898-d.1986) in December 1921 and had two children: Myra (b.1928) (m.Malcom Evans) and Jay (b.1930) (m.Betty Sax). Harry Torontow married Sarah Gottdank (b.1900-d. 1958) in November 1925 and had two children: David (b.1930) (m.Dorothy Agulnik) and Abraham (b.1934) (m.Ruth Addelman). Harry later remarried after Sarah's death. He married Sarah Lazarus in November 1959. Saul Torontow married Doris Cohen (b.1907) and had one daughter, Etta Rhoda (b.1938) (m.Ronold Bodnoff).
