- History / Biographical
- Boruch (Baruch) Schmelzer (died abt. 1910 in Suceava) and his spouse (name unknown) had three sons: Jacob (b. Dec. 1870 in Austria), Moses Issac, and Chiam (b. 1862 in Lemberg, Austria). Jacob was a sheep farmer and married Miriam Lecker, daughter of Pesach and Esther Lecker. She was born in Lemberg in 1874. Jacob and Miriam had 10 children: Joseph, Willie, Phillip, Jennie, Rose, Bertha, Ben Zion, Israel, Itzipe, and John. In 1912-1913, Jacob left for Montreal to prepare for the family to emigrate there. He returned in 1914 to get his family but was stopped on the way in England and sent back to Canada as an enemy alien due to the outbreak of the First World War. The family eventually settled in Montreal in 1920. Joseph Shmelzer was born October 2, 1900 in Suceava, Austria. He married Jean Hock (b. June 8, 1904) in Montreal on January 24, 1927. They had one child Sol Morton Shmelzer, he was born October 4, 1933 in Montreal, Quebec. He married Barbara Molot (b. Apr. 21, 1943) on December 26, 1961 in Ottawa, ON. They had 2 children: Roberta Louise, and Jane Rachel.
