- Notes
- First journal roughly half poetry, half prose, focusing on feelings of "Jewishness", family concerns including Ranaan's illness, a potential fourth child, and near the end, Ray's father's illness, as well as professional concerns - primarily attempts at poetry and the Jewish authors he is reading for inspiration: Elie Wiesel, Irving Layton, Phillip Roth, Isaac Bashevis Singer, and Leonard Cohen. Many of the dated poetry entries seem to pertain to current feelings or occurances of that day, essentially journaling in verse. Second journal: first half is almost entirely poetry or verse, only a little pertaining to his day to day life. Entire second half devoted to personal life, including Ranaan's poor health and introduction of former student Alison as children's caretaker.
