- Private Ben-Zion Shanas, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, was officially reported killed in action on December 7, 1943. He enlisted in the army in September 1939 and went overseas on December 17, 1939. He saw service in France in 1940 and participated in the Spitzbergen expedition as well as in the fighting in Sicily and Italy. A brother, Messalah Shanas, also served overseas with the Canadian army. There is a Star of David on his tombstone (see CJCCCNA photo).
